About us

We are an independent, family owned garden centre and tearooms, set in the beautiful surroundings of Elton’s Victorian walled garden. Here you will find a wide range of plants and trees, as well as garden furniture, garden buildings, gifts and garden accessories – all set against the magical backdrop of the walled garden.

We (Nick and Christine Smith) took over the centre at the end of 2013. Before we arrived on the scene, the site had previously enjoyed a reputation as a high quality plant centre, offering a wide range of perennials, shrubs and trees, including many of the less easy to find varieties. We intend to follow and develop that tradition, looking for the best of both new and old varieties from the best growers in the UK.

Our relaxing tearooms offer the chance to re-fuel with a midday meal, enjoy a homemade scone, or just sit back with a freshly made Illy Coffee cappuccino and watch the world go by – the choice is entirely yours!

The walled garden was originally created to provide fruit and vegetables for Elton Hall and Estate. The Estate and Hall have been in the Proby family since the 1660's, and it remains a private family residence for the Proby family today. The hall and gardens are open to the public in the summer months and are definitely well worth a visit. We can do no better than quote Wikipedia on the gardens “The Victorian gardens have been skilfully restored in recent years and contain a knot garden, a new rose and herbaceous garden, fine hedges and a gothic orangery built to celebrate the Millennium.” Another guide (www.britainexpress.com ) says of the hall; “The house is wonderful; visitors are taken around a collection of formal and semi-formal rooms by very knowledgeable guides. This is very much a family home, and the tour is anything but stuffy! Highly recommended.” Please visit www.eltonhall.com for hall and garden opening times.

Our knowledgeable and friendly staff are here to help you make the most of your visit, so if you can’t find what you are looking for, please feel free to ask. We very much look forward to welcoming you to the walled garden!
